4.6.1. Retaining Documents for Peition to Remove Conditions
Ninety days before the expiration of your spouse's new conditional lawful permanent residency card you will have to apply to remove the conditions on his residency. The steps in that process are discussed in the next section. However, it is important that you plan for that process now by retaining some of the required supporting documentation.
The purpose of the petition to remove the conditions on your spouse's residency is to prove that your marriage is a bona fide marriage and not a shame or fraudulent marriage. The purpose of this process is not to delve into your private relationship with your spouse but only to confirm that you are in fact living as husband and wife.
Here are some things you should do to prepare for this now:
1. Establish a joint bank account with your new spouse that will be used for household expenses.
2. Put your households bills in both your names.
3. You may also consider naming your spouse as a beneficiary on life insurance policies you own, on your 401K, and other such accounts. This will be additional evidence of your bona fide marriage but is not required.
4. You may also put your wife on the deed to your home if you own one. This is also not required but is additional evidence.
5. Retain photographs of your and your spouse together from trips, family get-togethers, etc.
Collect all of these documents in a safe place. You will need to provide them as supporting documentation to the USCIS in the next and final step.
