4.4. The Adjustment of Status Interview

Some time after you have attended your Biometrics appointment you will receive another notice from the USCIS which will instruct you and your spouse (and children of your spouse, if any) to attend an interview at the USCIS District Office with jurisdiction over your place of residence. The notice will indicate the date, time, and place of the appointment. As soon as you receive this notice put the date and time on your calendar. We also recommend that you also immediately look up directions to the USCIS facility where the interview will take place so that you are certain not to get lost on the day of the interview.

We have attached a copy of the adjustment of status interview notice you will receive. This notice lists several items you will need to take to you adjustment of status interview. We recommend that you review this notice now and begin collecting the documentation and place it in an envelop marked "Adjustment of Status Interview Documents." You may have already submitted some or many of these to the USCIS but it is important to take everything requested on this form with you to the interview.

It is very important that you make this appointment. Cancellation or rescheduling will delay the process and is only allowed in emergent situations. If an emergency arises and you cannot make the appointment be sure to contact the USCIS at the number listed on the appointment notice as soon as possible. *If you miss the appointment and do not reschedule in time your petition may be denied.

Most people are naturally nervous about the adjustment of status interview. In reality, most of the time the interview is relatively simple and nothing to be concerned about. The primary purpose of the interview is for the USCIS to ensure that all the information provided in the petition is accurate and complete. The USCIS may also want to confirm that all the required supporting documentation is in order. Although the interview is also intended to confirm that your marriage is a legitimate marriage, the USCIS simply needs to confirm that you and your spouse are living as husband and wife. The purpose of the interview is not to conduct and in-depth investigation of the intimate details of your relationship.

In order to ensure that your interview goes smoothly follow these guidelines:

1. Plan ahead and arrive early.
2. Bring all of the supporting documentation requested in the interview notice.
3. Bring a complete copy of the I-129 petition as well as the I-485 petition.
4. Relax.
